Copyright & Fair Use

How the Back to One scene library uses public-domain works and brief excerpts from copyrighted scripts, and how rights holders can reach us.

Effective September 29, 2026

What the library is

Back to One is an acting-practice app. Its library holds public-domain works and brief excerpts from certain copyrighted scripts, each presented as an acting exercise for rehearsal, memorization, cold reading, timing, performance practice, recording and self-review, with coaching on the skill it works.

Our position

For copyrighted excerpts, Back to One relies in good faith on the fair-use provision of United States copyright law, 17 U.S.C. ยง 107, based on the limited amount used, the teaching purpose and character of the use, and the fact that an excerpt is not a substitute for the original work. Fair use is decided case by case: this is our reasoned position, not a guarantee.

Legal basis

Section 107 names teaching among the purposes that can support fair use, and asks four questions: the purpose and character of the use, the nature of the work, the amount used, and the effect on the market for the original. The Supreme Court has held that a commercial use can still be a fair use (Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, Inc., 510 U.S. 569 (1994)). The Second Circuit held that presenting limited portions of works for a new purpose, in a way that does not substitute for the originals, was fair use (Authors Guild v. Google, Inc., 804 F.3d 202 (2d Cir. 2015)). The Ninth Circuit held that fair use is authorized by law, so a copyright owner must consider it before sending a takedown notice (Lenz v. Universal Music Corp., 815 F.3d 1145 (9th Cir. 2016)).

What the app does not include

Back to One does not include film or television footage, production stills, music, soundtrack audio or original recorded performances, and it does not provide complete scripts. It uses only the limited script text needed for each exercise.

Ownership

Copyright in the underlying works remains with their owners. Works, characters, writers, studios and productions are named only to identify the source of an excerpt. Their inclusion does not mean that any of them is affiliated with, sponsors, authorizes or endorses Back to One.

Your recordings

Recording or exporting a take does not give you ownership of, or a license to, the third-party script material in it. Private rehearsal and audition use may differ legally from public distribution or commercial use, and you are responsible for deciding whether your intended use of an exported recording needs permission. See the Terms of Use.

Rights holders

If you own or represent the rights in a work excerpted in Back to One and have a concern, email support@sgtzaddy.com or visit sgtzaddy.com/backtoone/copyright. Please identify the work, the scene in the app, your contact details and the basis for your request. Our policy is to review every request promptly and, on a good-faith request from a copyright owner or authorized representative, to remove the excerpt in the next update of the app.

Scripts you add

Scripts you write or import stay on your device; Back to One does not host them. You are responsible for having the right to use them.
